Lastly, as a recovering addict, I know it would have looked like a suicide if anyone found me in my worst stages - using coke for days on end, then to pass out quickly I'd take - all at once - Sleep MD, Diphenhydramine in Tylenol PM & Bendryl, a MINIMUM of twelve 2mg Ativan, Vicodin, shots of vodka, Nyquil, Unisom, weed (which NEVER worked as a downer then, because it would make my mind start racing again), Ambien CR, Lunesta, and as many whippets as necessary - generally 24-36 cannisters to cut off my oxygen so I could avoid the crash. If anyone found me, they'd be SURE it was a suicide. But that was never so. It was all to avoid the crash - & the guilt associated with using altogether. I am EXTREMELY lucky - I did this for years, with my tolerance for both coke & downers increasing steadily, as progression is the nature of this disease.

I am grateful to be clean today, and Adam was a big part of my recovery. I KNOW how an addict thinks - I am one. For those of you on here who think addiction is a choice, that's OK. I have learned acceptance is vital to my recovery. You have a right to think what you wish. I'm actually happy I'm an addict; I now have tools I need to learn how to cope with stress & live life on life's terms. If you think AA/NA "brainwash" you into believing addiction's a disease (despite massive amounts of proof the medical field), well great. I sure needed my brain washed.

I believe every person is an ingredient making up one big delicious meal. Some are sour like lemons, some are spicy, some sickeningly sweet. Yet together we're all necessary to complete the dish. Occasionally I'm reminded how grateful I am to be who I turned out to be. Right now is one of those times. And if you're reading this, I believe you're special, unique & necessary too, even if we're not alike.

RIP Adam. You made a HUGE difference in my life, for which I will be grateful, one day at a time. I hope what comes out of your passing is that at least 1 person recognizes their self-destructive path & chooses to get help, and that it serves to educate those who are uneducated about addiction to open their minds to understanding this life-threatening & VERIFIABLE disease. Rest in peace.

Its still unclear whether its a suicide. There is a lot of shame & guilt associated w/ relapse. He had relapsed a few days before & was planning to go to rehab the following day. Anyone who has done coke/crack enough knows the crash is HORRIBLE. Its common to take a bunch of downers to knock you out before you face the horrifying trauma of coming down. It remains to be seen if:
1. What milligrams the Oxys were. Many people use 80 mg Oxys. If Adam took 8-9 10 mg Oxys, it's possible he was just trying to knock himself out before the crash in a last hurrah before rehab. 8-9 80mg Oxys=prob suicide.
2. If he was prescribed Oxys for his pain & had a tolerance to an amount, it would still make sense for him to take his normal dose + extra pills to avoid the crash not thinking he'd die.
3. No note left or (as of yet) any cryptic last minute mixes on his laptop, or leave a will for his mother to whom he was very close.
4. Barricading of doors is also common when you're paranoid on crack.
So its possible it was a suicide, but also quite feasibly, he relapsed on crack, knew he was going to rehab the next day so he went balls to the wall, tried to make himself pass out before the crash.

RE: ifyouseekkatie

You are 100% wrong. "The only requirement for membership is a DESIRE to stop using." You DO NOT need to be sober to attend an AA or clean t attend an NA meeting. In fact, somewhere along the lines many addicts hear something at a meeting to which they can relate & then decide to get clean.

I'm 100% with you Mishy. As a recovering addict, I know how much of a disease addiction really is. And no it is NOT a choice. How many of you made the best decisions at 14 years old? Use stems vastly from abusive homes to simple experimentation. Those not prone to addiction move on. Addicts don't.

He was well known in his own right! Ok, he fell into the habit again. He was on his way to rehab. May he rest in peace now. I can hear this song in my head.
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall.
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.
Call Alice
When she was just small.
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low.
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know.
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head"

Perez, is it not weird that Heath Ledger "mysteriously" dies of an overdose... then Michael Jackson "mysteriously" dies of an overdose, then DJ AM "mysteriously" dies of an overdose. I think it's time to ask if there's a link and a helping hand in this process.
