This is such a colossally stupid move. I did a study a few years back, pre crunch, on the live music market – which at that point was already at saturation level. New entrants were needing to bring something different to the market (child-friendly festivals, luxury festivals, webcasts, cinecasts, etc.) if they were to take any real share (third rate acts and a Perez presents banner doesn’t really constitute something different – something crap perhaps but not something different). Since the crunch, established live music events have seen sales fall and have had to cut prices. Established acts are cutting their tours and ticket prices. New and recent entrants to the market are dropping out – because they realise that it’s as financially sound as lending high-risk borrowers 125% mortgages! I can’t wait to see the farcical chain of events, disappointments and legal wrangles this piece of entrepreneurial genius brings! Either that or it’s just going to be the most ridiculously over-hyped string of student-organised style nightclub events ever!
