It would be very hard to prove it was a "hate crime". The thugs said that they "thought it would be easier to rob a gay man". As bad as that is, I don't know if that is a hate crime (Stereotype, yes. Hate crime, no). That's like saying when women get robbed it's a hate crime. No, it's because they are easier to steal from (generalization). They got pretty fair sentences. One got 30 years in Prison, and the other may get life in prison.
