Also, I will have it be noted that I was planning on giving the student speech. I had every intention of doing it but then... I actually thought about it and.. thought, "that would actually suck a whole lot more than it would rule." Go James. Thinking stuff through. Go, give into the pressure of the Students Against James Facebook! Because by giving into the will of these nerd, tapioca pudding loving students, who live to conform, you are actually defying the system in the coolest way. The cool faculty and students at UCLA will always have a boner for you no matter what jerk move you do...and THAT makes you a hero. In a sense, you just deliverd your speech without words.

When he raised his hand, we all listened. It was never directly related to the reading (who actually does the shit reading they assign?) but it was something cool like, "I think it is important to understand America's fascination with the Holocaust was originally introduced to them by the PBS mini series Holocaust. Their context is shaped by the strage media depiction of public television." I actually excited in seeing him in the same J Dean Leather Jacket and Italian motorcycle boots. People say he was an ass or a douche. No Way. He handed out I-Pod touch screens to the three hot chicks who took his notes from him in class. I am sure you would have done a whole lot more than scribble quotes with your RSVP pen for an I Pod touchscreen. God, I would have probably contraced syphillis for a touchscreen. So he is hot and successful and gets to smoke the best weed before class. So am I! So did I. In what book does that make us less cool? Less Worthy?

I am graduating from UCLA this year and I had a Lit class w/ James & he is more or less the ONLY person I would have the attention span to watch speak. Clinton sure, Obama okay, but who speaks for the stoned freaks trapped in hot people bodies? Who will speak to us? What about the geniuses who are never taken seriously because of their chiseled features & killer chic wardrobe? It is more or less true, everyone at our school hates James Franco. Wonderful! Most people at our school are totally hated. They are narrow, awkward and wear ducky pajama pants and the same light blue UCLA sweatshirt EVERY day of the year. When they raise their hand to speak everyone squints and moans and prays from them to shut their stupid uncertain mouths. James wasn't like that. ..listen for more....

Isn't two weeks sufficient time to find SOME commencement speaker?
.
.
.
Maybe he was chosen because he graduated from UCLA but he also has life experience in the actual industry?! And maybe he had some useful advice for the students who were going to be starting out in the real world now they have graduated.

As a UCLA graduating senior I am bummed he's not going to speak. That was the only reason I wanted to go to the commencement ceremony in the first place.

Some Seniors at UCLA objected to James Franco as their commencement speaker because they were in classes with him during their Junior and his Senior years. Like any other class mate, he is their academic peer. That is why they felt he was an inappropriate choice. However, their protests started months ago when he was selected as speaker, and had died down as the quarter wore on because the ceremony was coming up. For him to pull out a week and a half before the graduation ceremony based on the opinions of a group of students out of THOUSANDS is pretty outrageous. Bill Clinton was invited last year at Franco's graduation, and had to pull out for his own reasons, which had nothing to do with internal UCLA groups objecting to a Democratic politician as speaker. Whomever they pick any year is going to elicit some flack. But you don't pull out as lead speaker for a HUGE commencement ceremony at the last minute because of pre-preparation for a film shoot.
