He realizes they had a huge impact on music, but simply wishes to bring back some of what Nirvana took away. And believe it or not, Kurt Cobain is not god, so you don't have to worship at his feet. Second of all, what he's saying is true. The grunge movement was not about having fun, it was more about letting out your emotions out. It's sort of therapeutic in a way to listen to angry or depressing songs as it can relieve those feelings, but it's not fun.
