What a eff-up. I would be much more surprised to hear a 23-year old doesn't use a bong. This whole thing is stupid. I must say we Americans are masters at jumping on the hypocritical bandwagon. Leave him alone, already.

He had the chance to change and speak up for marijuana and show you can smoke weed and still be an olympic gold medalist, but he apparently has no backbone, it could have been such a turning point, a paradigm shift. He's a sell out and a coward for not standing up for his truth.

This whole pot smoking thing is ridiculous. Our Presidents, movie stars, sports athletes and so on can do it but Michael Phelps can't? Please give me a break! You've got people out there driving drunk and killing other people but when people smoke some pot or smoke cigarettes people freak out. Let them kill themselves. People should be looking at how many people are killed by alcohol.

A couple of puffs does not a 'giant pothead' make, previous poster.
This is more hypocrisy. The years of self-discipline and countless motivational hours in the pool and his stunning FOURTEEN career Olympic gold medals are not negated because he sucked a couple of puffs of smoke into his lungs on a night off. They simply want to shy away from controversy. How about focusing on what he accomplished? Pffft.
