[re=3289269]Re: TanaBanana[/re] #323
I also agree--education is a KEY component. I believe educating young women with the FACTS regarding these studies so that they don't have some fantasy regarding single motherhood & can be made fully aware of the reality of circumstances is a VERY important thing. As to the single moms--no I don't believe everyone is able to "do it themselves" (another reason that the difficulty should not be glossed over by media/t.v.), I am very much in support of counseling programs that we seem to both be a part of to help guide these women. What I do not support is government programs whose focus is "fixing" someone's bad choices w/free money. The worst instances I have seen is where women have made bad choices & then are "bailed out" w/ government assistance for rent,food/health care...they don't have to take any responsibility for improving themselves so that they can make wiser choices in the future--instead they continue the same behavior. As to me, yes I did do it "by myself" for a long time & I have a lot of pride that despite the crappy decision(s) I made--I took responsibility, grew, & overcame it. It would probably surprise you that I was an EXTREME liberal feminist in college but over the past decade have really become very conservative. I truly believe that the ultimate feminist is one who believes in giving women ALL facts about something so that she can make wise decisions.

[re=3288931]Re: Jenny2[/re] I do agree with you; all angles do need to be explored. We will just have to agree to disagree about blaming the mother for getting pregnant. I stand by my statement that young women and men need education, guidance, resources, and opportunity in order to make successful decisions in life. But, when an out-of-wedlock pregnancy occurs, they need input that is useful, not blaming; further chiping away at their self-esteem. Desperate, single mothers also make bad decisions to support themselves and their children when they feel they have no other opptions.

I can also tell you I would have had a much happier childhood if my father had not been in the picture. The fact that we bring many different issues into our discuss underscores both the importance of these issues and the complexities involved. I hope you do not get defensive about this as it is not meant as a personal attack. I admit I do not have all of the answers and my begining views are not always my ending views. I get a feeling from your personal comments that you are saying- I did it, and I did it by myself. Since I was able to do this myself everyone should be able to. I am sorry if I have gotten the wrong impression. It would help me if you will acknowledge that young women and men are indivuduals; each coming with their own set of needs. I respect you, even if we do not agree.

[re=3287982]Re: TanaBanana[/re] #317
I stand by EVERY single one of my prior posts including my comments regarding single mothers & those explaining Ann's comments regarding single mothers. The majority of those who are or have become single mothers have done so because of unwise choices on their part (choosing to have sex with the wrong person, or at the wrong time in their life). I told you I included myself as a past single mom in that category. I do not let men off the hook(nor does Ann)---the majority of single mom's are left holding the ball after irresponsible men reject taking care of the situation they helped create. But, again a woman who chooses to have sex with a partner that they do not know well enough to have full confidence in their "staying power" is not exactly a "victim" when the situation unravels--she needs to take responsibility for her part. THE WHOLE POINT IS THAT ANN IS POINTING OUT THAT THE MEDIA DISTORTS THE "EASY, BREEZY LIFE" OF A SINGLE MOM SO THAT TOO MANY WOMEN DO NOT THINK TWICE WHEN THEY ARE PUTTING THEMSELVES IN SITUATIONS THAT CAN RESULT IN THEM BECOMING ONE... Since we both deal with counseling of women--don't you agree that sharing FACTS & all sides of a situation is in that woman's best interest so that she can make wise choices for her future???

[re=3287156]Re: Jenny2[/re] I do applaud your struggle and ability to over come your speedbumps and help others through your wisdom. I am a sexual assault and domestic violence advocate. I do not volunteer; this is my job. I work with an incredible prevention team and our programs have garnered national acclaim. I am simply trying to get people to stop and think a minute when they are so quick to always blame the mother in a single parenting situation. I strongly believe in education and resources for young women and men. I think you should re-read your own comments and try to see them from another person's viewpoint. You have insulted yourself, based on your shared history. You also validated my point- single mom's need guidance, resources, and opportunity. You are living proof of what can be accomplished.
