Here's my take on "the industry" these days--we are in a downsizing economy. They (actors, writers, producers, everyone in or out of their respective entertainment-related unions) need to adjust their expectations accordingly. I'm a freelance writer and rates are down for most of us all over--why? Because ad rates are down and those pay for the writers and editors.

Meanwhile, I just took two of my kids to a matinee of IRON MAN the other day. They are both under twelve. We had 1 large popcorn between us and three drinks (out of the cooler--not the fountain). Total bill was just shy of $40! For a MATINEE in the rural New England ex urbes. Now, it was a lot of fun and we do like to see the occasional movie in the theater as opposed to NetFlix or a rental. But I guarantee with gas costs being what they are, and movie prices high (and now we have to suffer through ADS on top of that--and why don't movie prices reflect that?), that fewer families are going to go to the movies this summer. Or the same families will go fewer times.

The movie industry has always been considered recession proof, even in the Great Depression. But everyone in that industry is overpaid any way. The bubble has to burst sooner or later.

As for TV, I've hardly been watching at all. I say, bring on more crazy reality TV. The only thing worth watching as it is assurance that one's life is somewhat normal in comparison.

I stopped watching TV during the writers' strike and do not plan on watching TV again, especially when I watch them in their entirety on DVD. I found old shows on DVD that my 9 year old loves. Plus we read a lot, have movie nights, take long walks, etc. I'm tired of the greed. The actors receive far more than the writers do, and I cannot believe that they now want MORE when most Americans are struggling financially. This strike make be the final nail in the coffin for network TV.
