Howard is a faded figure who has reached the top of his game and I rather doubt he's looking to be a father with his fuck being used by a baby instead of him. It's not what he planned for the second and last part of his life. Night time feedings and dirty diapers is something he's already been through. He's got more money than god. Why would you want to damage your charmed life by marrying this bim?

Howard has all the chips in this duo. What does she bring to the table? Beth is not good looking, has nothing to say and her shelf life is very limited. She's on the cusp of becoming 40 and Howard is going to see that as a blemish on him.

Grinning, her favorite expression, makes her look more of a dufus than she is and Howard has locked himself in with a mistake that wasn't meant to go on for eight years. He saw a tall, skinny young woman with long, blond hair and didn't realize at the time that all he really wanted was a statement about himself to the world using this trophy that says to the world I've arrived.

Beth, by contrast, thought she'd landed the big fish and she'd not have to take those low end modeling jobs any more and besides, her time in the modeling industry was fast ending.

This will not end prettily. Both have different agendas and everyone can see it except the two principals.

She got herself a nice ring which, when sold, will bring her in enough money to not have to work for a while and besides, Howard will throw her a couple of million to sweeten the pot.
