In the UK servers get paid a lot more and speaking for all the waiters in our restaurant we work hard for our money. so before you go and criticize somebody's work ethic, you need to know what you are talking about. most servers in the US get paid half of the minimum wage which is sometime $2 to $4 an hour. Living in New York, you won't be able to get very far with the hourly rate so we depend on our tips and therefore work hard for them.. If you are in a high end restaurant, you are expected to pay a gratuity of 18% to 20% because we are trained to give you that type of service. No fake smiles. Because it is our job. If you don't like our expectations than quit coming the fuck over here. I'm sick and tired of excuses from people oversees not understanding the whole "tipping" thing. It is not that complicated. It is on EVERY travel book. Have a little awareness about the people who are serving your food and realize that some are trying to feed families on those miserable wages. Plus your pound and or euro is worth more than that. tipping 20% isn't going to kill your damn bank.
